Term: Anonymous (Internet Group)

1 Nov 2015

DEFINITION of ‘Anonymous (Internet Group)’
Anonymous is an on-line hackitivist group. The anarchist group started in 2003 on 4chan but has now grown and can be found on multiple social network services (SNS). Anonymous is most widely known for committing cyber-attacks to protect the internet and provide vigilante justice. When Anonymous members are in public, they wear Guy Fawkes masks to show allegiance and protect their identities.

BREAKING DOWN ‘Anonymous (Internet Group)’
It can be argued that the term “group” cannot apply to Anonymous as they have very little organization and leadership. In addition, anyone is free to join and leave Anonymous at any time and, once part of the group, are able to participate as much or as little as they’d like. When messages are sent from the group, voices are computer-altered.

Famous Anonymous attacks include catching paedophiles, Avenge Assange, DDoS attacks on Visa, Mastercard and Paypal, Operation Ferguson and Operation Ice ISIS.
