Research reveals that 1 in 5 highly engaged employees is at risk of burnout, while Millennials are the most stressed out generation in the U.S. today.
Making a big sale or beginning or completing an important project can make an ordinary work day into an extraordinary one, but there is a flip side to these successes that should not be ignored. Work-related issues such as stress and burnout can have a tremendously negatively affect on your health and well being.
An article by Emma Seppala and Julia Moeller in Harvard Business Review revealed that 1 in 5 highly engaged employees is at risk of burnout. Research also indicates that Millennials are the most stressed out generation in the U.S. today.
You can reduce or, if you’re lucky, completely defeat these issues by changing just a few of the the little and not-so-little things you do every day. Here are seven stress-reducing strategies to include in your daily routine:
1. Give yourself a bit more time in the morning.
Numerous research studies reveal that waking up earlier can get your day off on the right foot — helping you avoid the stress that comes along with always feeling like you’re a step behind the moment you get out of bed. Remember: Many of today’s most successful business people are early birds, including PepsiCo CEO Indra Nooyi (4:00 AM), Apple CEO Tim Cook (4:30 AM), and Richard Branson (5:45 AM).
2. Spread positivity.
When you’re feeling positive and optimistic, you’ll naturally be less stressed out and ready to take on the ups and downs that are a part of business. And when you exude positive vibes, others will pick up on them and feel less stressed too.
3. Make nutrition a top priority.
Avoid eating junk food for breakfast and lunch. For that matter, avoid eating junk food for dinner, too. If you’re not sure what you should be eating to feel better and less stressed, consider these 14 superfoods that should be a regular part of everyone’s diet.
4. Create a daily to-do list that includes breaks.
A to-do list is an absolutely mandatory tool for feeling on top of your work and avoiding stress. But this means not just putting together a to-do list — in priority order — but actually sticking to it. That’s the hard part.
5. Take frequent walk breaks.
Sitting at a desk all day long is a prescription for ill health and stress. We need activity to feel at our best and to take in the oxygen we need for our brains to work well. During the course of the workday, take several walking breaks — all you need is 10 or 15 minutes to boost your endorphins and relieve your stress.
6. Rethink your after-work routine.
Instead of going home and planting yourself in front of your TV set, consider doing something fun that gets you out of the house. Meet up with a significant other, a friend, or someone else to engage in a hobby or activity. When you’ve got your mind off of work, then you’ll know that you’ve found the right thing to do.
7. Get back to nature.
When you’re feeling stressed out, breathing fresh air and simply being outdoors will do wonders for you while reducing your stress. As naturalist John Muir once said, “The clearest way into the Universe is through a forest wilderness.”
