To become a remarkably effective leader, here are 7 leadership hacks you can put to work starting today.
1. Exercise awareness.
Great leaders don’t act holier-than-thou, but they do act in a manner that easily sets them apart from the people they lead. Understand what sets you apart from other bosses or workers, and maintain an objective, balanced perspective throughout your work.
2. Walk the walk.
As a leader, you will need to do what you say you are going to do. This is important because it drives results, but, more significantly, it tells people that you avoid hypocrisy and can be trusted to get the job done.
3. Be proactive
True leaders hate to sit back and do nothing. Make things happen in your company or organization by taking charge, and make sure to persevere along the way to success.
4. Stay bold.
According to Bill Taylor, the true mark of a leader is, “the willingness to stick with a bold course of action–an unconventional business strategy, a unique product-development roadmap, a controversial marketing campaign–even as the rest of the world wonders why you’re not marching in step with the status quo.” Can you stand for something special, even when others cast doubt?
5. Help others.
The greatest leaders recognize those with promise and will set aside time and money to develop the next generation of leadership. Help employees develop their own set of technical or professional skills and you will be rewarded by their growth.
6. Think positively.
Act as a source of positive energy. This will keep your own spirits high but can uplift others around you, especially during times of distress. Optimistic leaders don’t personally criticize others and avoid negative thinking–positivity is what brings a team together, leading to more efficient and higher-quality results.
7. Practice decisiveness.
Leadership isn’t always going to be sunshine and rainbows. Tough decisions will be part of everyday business, but it is a leader’s job to make sure these decisions are timely, final, and act in the best interests of everyone even if the decision doesn’t please everyone. Stand firm and consider fostering a decision-making process that can be collaborative as well.
