NewsWatch: Jobless claims jump 2.4 million in mid-May — but the number is almost 1 million higher when federal filings are included

Some 2.2 million unemployed Americans applied for jobless benefits last week through the states while another 1.1 million new claims were filed through a temporary federal-relief program, reflecting persistent pressure on struggling companies to slash payrolls even as the economy slowly reopens for business.
